15. Mutual Defense Network (MDN)

No one can survive alone on Planet Visitor. All the biggest guns, rover and turrets can't do a thing against a relentless team of well organized opponents. And heaven help the lonely newbie who opens his base without being in an MDN.

A Mutual Defense Network, or MDN, is the most powerful weapon in your arsenal. An MDN is a clan. They are a small group of teammates that are there to watch each others backs. If you are new to Visitor, the first thing you should do is look for an MDN who is accepting members. You should do this before advancing to level 2 and opening up your base.

To find an MDN, select your MDN channel in the bottom right of your display and click EDIT. You can search for MDNs using this tool (see below). Look for MDNs that are both Online, and have Vacancies. You can also try teleporting to friendly camps and ask around. Also, try going to the UN at region #1000005. There are always lots of people trading in there, and you will likely find someone who is willing to help you. You may also find MDNs to join in the chat rooms or Posting Boards at www.projectvisitor.com. Don't worry about getting into a good, one, just get into one, or start your own, and recruit others to join.

Once in an MDN, you will be a part of a new chat group, and you will be able to speak freely with your new clan. There will likely be experienced players in your new MDN, and they should be able to give you a lot of pointers about how to survive on Planet Visitor. Also, they will be able to help you out when you get in trouble (and I do mean WHEN, not IF).

Once you are more experienced, you may wish to form your own MDN. There are a lot of benefits to being in an MDN:

  • The MDN is the only chat group that will show you when your associates are online. Players not online will be grayed out.
  • If one of a player's camp is attacked when that player is offline, all MDN members are alerted of the attack. Note: See Chat for more details on camp alerts.
  • If you hit the red "!" in the bottom left of your screen, you can alert your entire MDN and let them know that you need assistance.
  • If you hit the green "!" in the bottom left of your screen, you will send an All Clear message to your mdn members indicating the camp is safe.
  • The owner of the MDN can accept, reject, promote and eject any MDN member. The owner can also change the MDN Signature and set the "Invite Applicants" checkbox.
  • The 2nd position of the MDN can set the "Invite Applicants" checkbox, accept, reject, promote and eject players 20-4.
  • The 3rd position of the MDN can set the "Invite Applicants" checkbox, accept and reject new members.
  • All members of a MDN must be of the same corporation.
  • An MDN can hold a maximum of 20 Avatars.
  • If you are not in the top 3 of an MDN, you will not see the "Invite Applicants" check box.

To join or create an MDN, left click on the Com Channel button in the bottom left of your display and a command list will pop up. Select EDIT MDN and the following dialog box will appear.

To search for an MDN, type in the name of an MDN in the MDN SEARCH field and then click the SEARCH button. If you do not know the spelling of an MDN, you can simply enter the first few letters. A list of matches will appear in the window. Only 10 or so will appear at once, and you will need to use the UP and DOWN arrows to view others on the list.

You will notice that some MDNs have an 'O' or a 'V' next to it. The 'O' indicated that there is someone in that MDN currently Online that can immediately accept you into the MDN. The 'V' indicates that someone in that MDN has checked the "Invite Applicants" checkbox. These MDNs have a Vacancy, and are currently seeking new members.

You will notice that the MDN names are colored. The color indicates the Corporation of the MDN (Red-eXtreme; Blue-InfraStruct; Green-BruteForce; Yellow-ToyCo). You can only join an MDN of your Corporation. Once you have found the MDN you wish to join, click on the MDN name to select it, and click the JOIN button. If there is room in the MDN, that MDN will be alerted of your petition. Only the top 3 members can accept you. If they are online, they will either accept or reject you. You can only petition to join one MDN at a time. If you want to change your petition, click the leave button. You can leave an MDN at any time.

If you wish, you can create your own MDN. Type in a name in the CREATE MDN field, and then click the CREATE button. If the name is available, the MDN will be created. It is now up to you to find other members to join your new MDN, but once it is full, you will be very powerful. Remember, you can leave an MDN at any time, even if you created it. Once you leave, all members below you will go up one rank to fill the space.
